Insult and Injury

It is hard to believe that with all that has happened on this cruise, we still managed to have a good time but we did.  We laughed a lot (in between complaining).  Our last day was spent in the usual way..mostly packing and filling out forms.  We couldn't go play croquet as planned because the lawn was being watered by God..it was raining this morning and very foggy and chilly.  We met Kay at the coffee bar then came back to pack while Kay went to look at pictures.  We had some taken in the martini bar and Kay wanted to look at them.  We had been getting pictures taken every night in an effort to get one that all of us liked with no luck.  Kay came by to show us the picture she bought and I will post it when she sends it to me as it was really good.  Anyway we did our usual martini's before dinner then went to the last show or at least I think it was tonight.  It was Cirque type and was good.  Everything is running together now.  We all split up to return to our cabins to put the last of the stuff in the luggage and get it out by midnight.  We were actually docked in Ensenada before Debbie and I went to bed.  I haven't been there in 30 years and it has grown a lot since I was there last but it's still Mexico.

We get up with a wake up call and I was in the bathroom when I heard the phone ringing.  Debbie answered it and this is the "icing on the cake" for this cruise.  I came out and Debbie has her hands over her face and is crying and said she had to go to the desk as they have "dropped her luggage into the ocean"..OMG!  Are you kidding me?  They bring out the bag dripping water..at least they have retrieved it but now it weighs 1,000 lbs and her Coach bags and blow dryer, straightening iron, makeup mirror and shoes are ruined.  She had clothes in there as well and the salt water caused the colors to run onto other things and all her paperwork (including our future cruise certificates that she worked so hard to get for us) were one huge glob.  Anyway, they wrap the bag in plastic and give her a claim form and said the bag would be on the bus with her other bag.  We head off to the lounge to have a continental breakfast and wait for our bus number to be called which they say will happen at 8:30 AM.  They had just called for bus # 11-12 & 13 as we walked into the lounge at 8 AM..our bus is #65 so 8:30 seems like a stretch to put it mildly.  It is pouring rain which they say this is slowing down the process, this lounge is packed with no room to sit.  We do find a seat with another couple who has a 3 PM flight to Denver that they must make..  I doubt they did as their bus got called the same time as ours..we boarded the bus at 10:45 AM!  It was raining so hard the roads were flooded out.  It rarely rains there so it took forever and traffic was backed up everywhere.  What is normally and hour and 15 or 20 minute ride took us 3 hours to get to the border crossing  The traffic backup there was unbelievable and I'm thinking we will be on this bus eternally.  A Royal Caribbean rep boarded the bus to tell us how they paid to have 35 or 40 extra customs agents here today so that we could get the buses through and have the agents board instead of us all having to get off.  Since they set up this stupid itinerary, I think they should have made it as easy as they could on us.  She says we will be there a maximum of 30 minutes unless they find something.  They bring the dogs on the bus with an agent and while this is going on they are taking the luggage out and sending select pieces through what looks like a portable scanning machine.  They of course select Kay's to open on a table under a tent.  While she is watching to be sure her dirty underwear isn't run up the flagpole they bring on two more agents who check our passports and take our customs forms.  We are cleared to go through and Kay saw her luggage put back on the bus so we are relieved to know we have made it to the USA..yippee!  It is now 1:30 and we are hungry and thirsty and getting irritable.

You would think the story would end here but no, no, no.  The bus driver pulls off to the side of the road and we are just sitting there and someone from the back goes up to speak with the driver in Spanish and is telling him she needs to go to the airport.  She apparently missed her own bus and they put her husband on one bus and she was on ours...OMG what else?  I guess he thought he would wait for that bus to come out of the border crossing but instead it never did so we head to the airport..  BTW our bus was for those NOT going to the airport.  The airport was mobbed with 64 buses from our ship plus the HAL Westerdam was in San Diego.  First the lady that spoke to the driver gets off and she is gone in the sea of people.  Then another lady takes her carry on and gets off?  We all just look at each other.  The bus driver is just sitting there then decides to close the door and pull away when another woman at the back says the second lady left her ID and passport laying on the seat.  She is screaming at the driver to stop and asks him to wait while she tries to find the woman..we all stare in disbelief.  Can this really be happening?  Finally the lady comes back.  She did find her and we are off now to the Sheraton to drop the first load.  The poor driver misses the sign that says Celebrity Buses turn here to offload and pulls to the entrance of the hotel.  Massive confusion now as the hotel staff are all arguing with the driver, amongst themselves and then with the cruise reps apparently.  They decide that they will take everything off where it is.  Now what would have been the easy thing to do was to put different color tags on the luggage going to the Sheraton and load that altogether and the same with the Embassy Suites which is where we were staying but that was not done.  Therefore the bell hops starting taking off all the luggage and we saw ours out there too so Debbie and Kay went flying out there while I stayed with the purses and carry on's.  Now everyone is arguing.  They finally get everyone off and our luggage back on and now there are only 5 of us left.

You would now think this is the end of this story but you would be wrong.  We get to the Embassy Suites and get a bell hop to help us with Debbie's 1,000 lb bag and they can't find a reservation for any of us.  I am afraid at this point to say what else could happen because it just keeps coming.  The girl finally finds us rooms (they are having a Urologists convention there and they are full.  There is humor in this somewhere).  It is now after 3 PM and we are starving and thirsty.   We had decided that we would go to Old Town and someone on the ship told us of a place to go that makes the tortillas while you watch.  We got a cab and order margarita's and food.  After two of these drinks and no food all day I am done in and ready for bed.  We caught a cab back and started taking Debbie's suitcase apart and drying off what we could.  We took the clothes to the laundry which luckily was on our floor because they weighed a ton.  We went downstairs to get a coke at their happy hour.  Debbie was getting her clothes out of the dryer and I was trying to rearrange my stuff to fly.  We are really tired and want a shower and bed.

Do you think this is the end of the story?  Of course it isn't.  I walked past the cabinet where the frig is and the carpet sloshed.  I asked Debbie if she had noticed it because she was standing there a few minutes earlier separating her papers.  She said no and called the front desk.  The girl asked if we thought she should send maintenance up?  Really?  We have seen enough water today to last us a lifetime .  They send a guy to fix it and we get showered and go to bed.  What a day is all you can say.

We got up this morning and her suitcase is pretty dried out and she was able to pack it all back in there again.  The zipper doesn't want to work and there is much that is ruined but at least it is dried out and it doesn't weigh 1,000 lbs anymore.  She was worried the airline wouldn't take it sopping wet so with it dry now it all went fine.  We all made it home weary but in one piece.  We all have cruise credits but couldn't think of anywhere we wanted to go this morning but home..LOL  Irony was we passed the port on the way to the aiport this morning and there was the Celebrity Solstice in all her glory.  It was a law made in 1906 to protect the jobs of US sailors called the Jones Act that made everyone get off in Ensenada yesterday and go through all that misery!

Major Eruption!!

The last two sea days have been interesting to say the least.  Yesterday we had latte’s from the coffee bar that doesn’t serve coffee then we met Kay for lunch in the dining room.  Again we are amazed that the waiters ignore our request for drinks and Kay winds up going to the casino bar a deck away to get our soda’s.  Then not one waiter offered to give us glasses for the soda’s she got.  We were in awe however as I spotted something that hadn’t been seen since we boarded the ship…salt and pepper shakers were on the tables again.  Wow, I took a photo and everyone stared at them as though it was something foreign.  Add more magma to the fire.  After that we went to the Hot Glass Show at the Lawn Club and after watching for a while, we played boccie ball then Debbie had an appointment with the Captain’s Club Manager to discuss our “issues”.  He didn’t show up and the girl told Debbie he was the wrong person to complain to anyway that she needed the Guest Relations Manager.  She got an appointment with him at 5:15 PM.  We went for gelato and then went to get ready for dinner.  I met Kay at the Molecular Bar while Debbie went to her meeting.  She joined us at dinner.  Kay and I had a great time at this new bar but Debbie didn’t like the martini’s there.  She said the guy who was the manager was the same one we saw in the martini bar earlier in the cruise with his boyfriend.  She said he was condescending at first but did listen to everything as she had it all typed up.  We finished dinner and went back to the Molecular Bar and they fixed us a dessert martini that was called “indulgence” and it was really good.  We tried one more and Debbie didn’t like hers so we headed to the casino.  We both did ok then decided to come back as another sea day came to an end.
5-4-13
We have been gradually changing the time by an hour and the last time was last night.  Debbie and I both woke up at 9 this morning which considering the time change was not bad.  We called Kay and met her on Lido for breakfast and lo and behold, everything is back to normal this morning…on the 9th day of the cruise.  Debbie is very organized and had it all typed up by each day that these things happened when she spoke with the manager.  Initially she said he wanted to blame it on the CDC but we had things before Kay did and vice versa so that just didn’t fly.  Anyway, we went to go play croquet but they had golf on the lawn so we did that instead.  It wasn’t easy since the grass has holes in it and it’s not like a green.  After that we went to a watch sale that Debbie wanted to look at.  Kay was a bit under the weather and came back to the cabin to read and write her blog and Debbie and I played in the casino.  Both of us did well.  We came back to the cabin to find a message from the manager Debbie spoke with yesterday and they are going to give us a cruise credit for a future cruise.  We were all excited about it when we met for martini’s before dinner then we went to dinner and the Maitre’d had seated two couples at our table!  Debbie was livid and went flying out the door.  Now this was the same guy that ignored us the first night we were there and kept seating people in line behind us.  Our waiter, table mates and others all wondered what was happening.  While Debbie was looking for the Guest Services Manager the Maitre’d came over to Kay and I with a bottle of champagne and Kay told him we weren’t interested since we had the premium beverage package and I looked at him and said it was totally unacceptable.  He left and Debbie came back and said the GSM was in disbelief of her story.  It is never ending with this cruise.  Too bad as the ship truly is beautiful and has a lot of really nice things but not this cruise for us for sure.  We have already gotten our disembarkation package so tomorrow is packing day and filling out customs and immigration forms.  Still more to catch you up on but I will do it when we get to San Diego.

This is the lobby and grand staircase...

It is interesting that all elevators on this ship are glass and also have a glass floor at the back.  This has freaked many people out who refuse to stand on the glass floor.

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to my beautiful daughter Teresa!  I love you!

I don't know where I'ma gonna go when the volcano blows...

Today the ship was literally empty.  Everyone had a “Do Not Disturb” sign on their door.  At 9:30 we got up because I told Debbie I was tired of hearing them vacuum the same area in the hallway waiting for us to get up.  Apparently everyone got up at the same time because when we headed to lido you couldn’t even get in.  Kay, Debbie and I decided to go to the Bistro on 5 which is a for fee restaurant just to avoid the hassle.  Again there were issues.  At the risk of sounding a bit prejudiced, much of the crew is from India, Pakistan etc.  Their views on women are very different than those of men in other countries and we have definitely been treated as second class citizens by them on this cruise.  We are not the only passengers who have noticed it either.  It is a very weird thing to explain but I really don’t like it and neither does anyone else.  They ignore us and even talk down to us as the waiter yesterday.  When Debbie placed her drink order at lunch he said "it's a bit early for that don't you think?" or something to that effect.  The entire table just stared in horror.

Anyway, they tell you they “can” get you a drink but they have to go somewhere else to get it and it may take a while.  As Kay said it should be “yes we will get you whatever you want” and the other information is not for passengers to be told period.  We had a nice lunch and then went to “tea” in another area of the ship and were seated with some ladies from Australia and England that were on the ship from Sydney so they gave us info too.  Apparently the outbreak of Norovirus started 3 days before the ship docked for the first time in the US in Maui.  The ship had to go through a full CDC inspection as well as Homeland Security and Coast Guard inspection since it had not been operating in the US for the last year.  They were a full day before they were able to get off so those that had booked their own excursions were not off in time and in most cases lost their money.  Many other stories but on with the day.  After tea Debbie, Kay and I went to walk in the gym but the treadmills were all full so Kay and I went walking on the promenade deck until it was time to get ready for dinner.  At dinner the table next to us was missing…literally so we asked about it and were told by the waiter that his boss had him move the table.  Well soon the people by the window came in and they couldn’t find their table so everyone was running around moving tables…aren’t they supposed to do this BEFORE they open the doors for dinner?  Then the people who sit at that table came in and couldn’t believe it when we told them the table was missing two minutes before they arrived.  The food has been just ok throughout the entire cruise to this point and I don’t think I  mentioned that before.  The 3 of us went to the casino after dinner and Kay was winning on her birthday money and Debbie and I did good for a short while then handed it all over again so we came back to the cabin.  I am writing the blog and Debbie is typing her complaint list to go over with the Captain’s Club Manager as she has an appointment with him tomorrow.  I doubt she will get far since he is also Indian (not the kind that had dinner with the pilgrims) and has been condescending every time she has talked with him to this point.  She is going to try anyway as she said she should start with him first.

May Day

Our first day at sea was a lazy day for almost everyone.  We have been going non stop since we left on 4-21-13 and everyone was exhausted.  It was fun to be lazy today and get up late.  We planned to meet Kay for lunch in the dining room so Debbie and I got a latte and a pastry at the specialty coffee bar (that doesn’t serve just coffee).  We met Kay in the dining room for lunch at noon and had a nice lunch being served instead of trying to balance the plates handed to us by the crew until we can find a table.  This has been an issue for many reasons but the lines to get anything on lido at the buffet are horrible because you are not allowed to touch anything yourself and must tell the crew member what you want and if you want a sandwich he has to put all every ingredient on there for every person in line so it just takes forever.  We thought this would only last a couple days into the cruise but here we are a week later and it is still a disaster.  Every day there is something else to add to the list of things wrong with this cruise.  People are very unhappy considering this cruise was expensive by normal cruise standards and is supposed to be a luxury line.  Even Debbie who is normally the even tempered one of us is like a volcano  that is ready to erupt at any moment.  I will list out tomorrow the things we have written down just so you can get a feel for what is going on.   We went to the casino this afternoon for a while and both Debbie and I did well playing the slots (this means we didn’t win but didn’t lose much either and had a little fun while we played).  Kay was off listening to a guitar player at the Lawn Club.   Debbie and I decided to go to the martini bar before dinner and get a drink and we did.  The waitress took our cards and disappeared and didn’t come back for 15 minutes making us late to dinner.  Unbelievable.  It has been one stupid thing after another.  Our dining room waiter and assistant are good and pleasant.   We enjoyed dinner and went to the show which was a production show.  It was great and one of the cast acted as if he was a passenger in the audience and was climbing over others and then changing seats.  He actually was very funny and this all was incorporated into the show.  Debbie wasn’t feeling well and I was tired so we came back to the cabin after the show and went to bed.  These are the flowers we bought in Haleakala from the back yard garden for $4.  They had a box there to put the money in.  The last photo was taken from the elevator and you can see the library bookshelves are empty.  Those went with the nurovirus as well.

Haleakala

We started this day by being at the tender station at 8:15.  We went down and were in the line for the next one.  There was one loaded and ready to leave but didn’t and didn’t and then more crew members came with radios and then officers and all were staring down the tender platform.  Soon they started unloading the tender and all those people had to get off.  Reassuring that the lifeboat we will depend on is not functioning.  This is  just another in the long line of things that have been piling up on this cruise but more on that later.   Luckily after a long delay, we got ashore and found the van to shuttle us to Avis to get our car but now we are an hour later than we thought we would be getting off.  We headed out to Haleakala which is at 10,000 feet.  It was a beautiful drive and you went from lush vegetation to moon like conditions.  We were in the clouds and rain then we would see beautiful blue skies.  Just an awesome drive and Debbie was a great driver and guide.  We weren’t sure that we could have time to make it to the top but we did but unfortunately we were unable at the time we were there to see anything because of the clouds.  The temperature at the top was 43 degrees and windy so we bundled up and headed to the observation center.  I have to say that yours truly got us into the park free because of my “senior US Park Pass”.  It saved us a whole $10 for parking.  We got to see the Silversword which is really a bright silver plant that only grows on this volcano.  We stopped on the way up to buy flowers from a local garden and saw cattle on the way up too.  We had a great day and made it back to stand in the long weaving line for the tender back to the ship.  We showered and got ready for dinner and went to see the comedian in the theater.  He was mildly amusing.  Debbie went to the casino and I came back to the cabin and was asleep before she got back.
Pictures will follow when we get to San Diego...The internet is not cooperating with the photos.
